What is the purpose of the CIA?

“They hate us for our freedom.” Right. No, they hate us for what the CIA (and the NSA, etc.) has been doing with our money and support around the world for decades: over-throwing legitimately elected leaders, arming both sides, exploiting their resources and women, and when it suit us, bombing the bejeezus out of them, killing mostly civilians. Small wonder why there are people willing to blow themselves up just to inflict some of the pain they’ve experienced back on us. Not a justification, just an observation. Perhaps it’s time for a new approach. Perhaps being the arms-merchants of the world isn’t much of an answer. Maybe if we used those trillions of dollars we spent on armies and armaments to supply them with water, roads, hospitals, medicine, schools, electricity and indoor plumbing there would be fewer willing to hate us? Just a thought. I realize I’m naive, but clearly, US foreign policy of the last 50 years is, ahem, somewhat lacking…
