What is the role of a temporary guest worker program in helping to secure our borders?
The U.S. currently has a guest worker program: It is known as undocumented immigration. We must legalize this flow by creating a new temporary worker program that would give workers the opportunity to work where they are needed, and employers experiencing shortages the workforce they need to remain competitive. Such a program would provide legal visas, family unity, full labor rights, labor mobility, and, if the worker so desires and will not displace a U.S. worker, permanent residence and citizenship over time. Such a program also would diminish significantly future illegal immigration by providing people with a legal way to enter the U.S. and return, as many wish, to their home countries, communities, and families. A program such as this would allow our government to better focus resources on those who mean to do us harm.
