If you are educating a child other than by regular attendance at school, ETD will arrange for a representative of the School Improvement Division EHE Team to make contact with you. Members of the School Improvement Team have a broad experience in education and will have received additional training in elective home education. Their role is to advise Children’s Services about the suitability of the home education you are providing. To help them do so, they will ask you for information about your provision. While home educators are not legally obliged to provide this information, the courts have advised that it would be “sensible” for them to do so and if the parent or carer refuses to answer, having been “allowed a sufficient time to set in motion their arrangements for home education”, the court has said that the authority could conclude that the parents or carers are in breach of their duty.
