What is the salary range of a sign language interpreter?
An interpreter with a two-year degree in Sign Language Interpreting can seek employment with one of four agencies on Long Island: Deaf & HH Iinterpreting Services, All County Interpreting, New York Society for the Deaf, or Millneck Services for Deaf Adults. All of these agencies require a screening where the candidates ethics, socio-cultural knowledge, and language skills(both English & ASL) will be assessed. An individual who satisfactorily passes this screening will begin earning roughly $28-$30/hr with a 2 hour minimum. Those who are nationally certified by the Registry of Interpreters for the Deaf (RID) will jump to $40-$50/hr. Freelancing requires flexibility, maturity, and organization. Freelancers are responsible for managing assignments, processing payment invoices, and deducting social security and federal/state taxes from ones own wages. An interpreter can also choose to work in an educational setting (either as a staff interpreter in a school for the deaf or with a mainstrea
