It is used for 1. To create virtual IP subnet attaching to the same physical LAN interface, therefore, there are two IP addresses assigned to the LAN interface of router and there are two subnets available in the LAN. Those secondary IP addresses can access the WAN too, but they can not be assigned by DHCP server from router. DHCP server support the main IP subnet only. 2. Create a secondary IP address which is located at the same IP subnet as LAN IP interface. Sometimes, it is used for management.
