What is the transparent proxy, and how does it affect me?
Even if you don’t set up a proxy server, all your browsing is probably going through BigPond Broadband’s transparent proxy. In general, this isn’t a bad thing. The proxy will make browsing a little faster, by caching content and reducing the bandwidth load on Telstra’s links. There are some instances however, where the transparent proxy server causes problems. The most noticeable of which is Frontpage Extensions, which will refuse to work if you don’t inform it that the transparent proxy exists.
