VG is designed to work over 4 pair Category 3, 4 and 5 cable, i.e., a network link between a node and hub, or a hub and a hub, requires 4 pairs of CAT 3, 4 or 5 wire. All VG products today support all three cable types. However, this cable can come in two forms: bundled and unbundled. Un-bundled cable for VG consists of 4 twisted pairs of wire (each pair is twisted, not all 8 wires together) in a single sheath. Bundled cable has many twisted pairs (usually 25) in one big sheath. VG can use bundled wire between the hub and nodes. VG cannot use bundled cable for hub to hub connections. This feature is used to support older Cat 3 cable installations that used bundled cable for telephone use. Most newer cable plants use un-bundled cable and many companies are installing CAT 5 for their new cable plants.
