What is Tooth Whitening (Bleaching) and is it safe?
Tooth whitening is the process of lightening your teeth color through dental products such as whitening strips or gel. You can use laser whitening (faster, 1-hour procedure that whitens several shades), traditional whitening (2 hours or more), or whitening strips (requires repeated applications and marginally visible whitening). You should consult a dentist to determine whether bleaching is a safe procedure a recommended. Artificial/porcelain/fillings cannot be bleached, so you should keep in mind that your teeth will look a different color if you have any articficial teeth replacements. In general, the procedure of teeth whitening is safe, but can cause moderate to very painful sensitivity for teeth and gums afterward. You should not bleach your teeth longer than the recommended amount for whatever product you are using.
Bleaching is a very conservative and non-invasive approach to creating a brighter and more appealing smile. Teeth can often take on a darker and unattractive appearance with age or from contact with staining substances. The discoloration can be caused by tobacco, coffee or tea, juices, poor hygiene, genetics, and natural aging.
