This is the process of preparing video footage to be viewed via the internet. There are two types of streaming: Progressive streaming – here the compressed video file is downloaded from the web server to the user’s hard drive. Most formats require that the whole video is downloaded before it can be viewed. This type of streaming is best suited for shorter videos (under 3 minutes). Real-time streaming – here the compressed video resides on a special server. The user can start viewing the video immediately and can jump to different locations in the video without having to wait for it to download. This type of streaming is best suited for longer videos (over 3 minutes). At the moment, playback is usually more predictable and reliable with progressive streaming as this eliminates other variables, such as the user’s connection speed.
