Mr. DeGraffenreidt: WGL Holdings is a holding company whose primary subsidiary is Washington Gas Light Company, a local distribution company that provides gas service for the District of Columbia, six Maryland counties and a large part of Northern Virginia, going as far west as Winchester and the Shenandoah Valley. The company was formed in 1848 by an act of Congress to put the light on the top of the Capitol Building with which most Americans are familiar. The purpose of the light is to let everyone know that the people’s government is in session. The original light was a gas light, hence the name of our company, Washington Gas Light Company. Our business grew from there to put street lighting in the city of Washington prior to the arrival of Thomas Edison and his bright idea, which caused us to move into other things like indoor gas cooking and heating and water heating.
