Other people strategies are retention (keeping existing staff and improving satisfaction and engagement) and recruitment (adding new staff to fill vacancies). Quite simply workforce optimization means being the best we can be as individuals and as a collective group to provide the best possible patient and family-centred care. The three pillars of workforce optimization are: 1) Health-care providers working together in collaborative practice. 2) New service delivery models across the continuum of care to more appropriately meet the health needs of the specific patient population(s). 3) Improved utilization of health-care providers so that they are working to the full extent of their knowledge, skill and training.
