What kind of water is best to use when mixing baby formula?

As soon as the water has come to the boil its ok – you don’t need to keep boiling it, in fact if you boil it for a long time, the minerals that are naturally in the water are at a higher concentration which could be damaging, so just bring to the boil and take it off again, and you should let the water cool for about 30mins before adding to the formula. If you boil water in advance of needing it, for example the night before, it will be okay for the next 24 hours as long as you keep it in the kettle or sterile bottled. I would just boil water from the tap, but if your tap water isn’t good for drinking then be careful which bottled water you use – you would want the one with the least mineral content as otherwise there could be too much of things like sodium (which is basically salt) for the baby to handle.

If your baby is under 6 months old you should be using purified or distilled water, any non fluoridated water will do. The American Dental Association recommends not using water that contains high levels of fluoride when mixing powdered or concentrated baby formula. Too much fluoride puts your baby at risk for enamel fluorosis, a condition that develops while the teeth are forming in the gums. You should probably avoid spring water as it may contain extra minerals and formula already has all the minerals a baby needs. If you choose tap water, use the cold-water faucet and allow the water to run for a few minutes before you use it. This reduces the chance of lead and other mineral contamination. Be sure to bring the water to a rolling boil. Boil it for about one minute, and then allow the water to cool before using. Don’t boil the water more than once or for too long, since that can increase the concentration of impurities.

I buy the gallon Nursery water to be on the safe side as we have well water ($1.18 at Walmart). I sometimes get Walmart brand drinking water also by the gallon ($.72).

you should boil tap water in a kettle and then let it cool down for half an hour. yes you can use spring water but it’s just wasting money.
