In North America they are known as prairies; in Asia they are called the steppes, and in South America they are called pampas. There are two types of grasslands: temperate and tropical. Temperate grasslands are located farther from the equator than tropical grasslands. According to the University of California Museum of Paleontology’s online exhibit “The Grassland Biome,” temperate grasslands experience temperatures ranging from minus 40 degrees to more than 100 degrees Fahrenheit and experience between 20 and 35 inches of rain each year.
