What other search engines use technology similar in effectiveness to that used by Google?
This is a difficult question to respond to, because Google has really changed the way that big search engines operate, by revolutionising the way their backend servers process and filter data… They use hundreds of relatively cheap, clustered servers, running a flavour of Linux, to perform the vast calculations and operations needed to serve the data for Google’s millions of users. This has resulted in a service which is very effective and even more cost-efficent in terms of output vs. hardware and money spent. In terms of algorithms, Google’s search methods are a closely-guarded secret, so I couldn’t really answer that question without having insight into the inner-most workings of Google and its competitors, but I suspect that Overture, Google’s main competitor, uses search technology similar in nature to Google – but this cannot be confirmed. Other search engines use more outdated or less dynamic methods to retrieve search results, as they are less process-intensive – but less effi
