It solves the problem of time adjustment for travel. If you fly around the world from east to west in 24 hours, it would be the same time and date as when you left if the International Dateline didn’t exist. Just as time zones are used to adjust time for the location relative to the sun’s highest point in the sky (noon), the International Dateline solves the problem of the date.
