What problems has FHM encountered in Haiti?
In January 2007, the regional hospital which served as FHM’s home base officially closed and FHM-supported physicians found themselves practicing under increasingly adverse conditions. Since then, FHM has seen things that they never expected, even in Haiti. FHM physicians have had to do emergency cesarean sections without the assistance of an anesthesiologist. In one situation, Dr. Delson Merisier, a local OB/GYN, had to give a woman unmatched blood to save her life. World food prices and the aftermath of tropical storms are quietly killing children in alarming numbers because Haiti does not have the resources to respond. FHM has had to move from longer-term community development to providing short-term emergency relief, expanding feeding programs for infants and young children.
