Scrap the idea of making a layout from scratch, afterall there is no point in reinventing the wheel, if you search yahoo/google for “free web layout templates” you will find all shaped and sized layouts, most of which are easy to adapt, in comparison to making your own from ground up, also, about 50% of these do not even require any link back, and is completely free to use how you like.
