What side effects do antibiotics have during breastfeeding?
I took several antibiotics for 9 weeks for a postpartum infection. My son and I battled yeast infections of every kind for months afterward, and we both became lactose intolerant because of them. Some medication, including antibiotics, can damage the villi in the small intestine that produce lactase, plus the antibiotics kill the good bacteria in the gut. You should probably take probiotics and ask your doctor if there is any kind of probiotic your baby can take. Obviously, a baby can’t swallow a pill. 🙂 Of course, our problems were probably so sever because I was on 3-5 antibiotics at any given time for over two months, so you might not have to worry so much with just one course of a single antibiotic.
