What steps and costs are involved in completing a conservation easement?
• First, make contact with land trusts that serve your area to obtain information about their history and experience and the types of land and conservation values they seek to protect. Remember that there are only about three land trusts that serve the entire state of Colorado and that in any given area or county, there is only going to be zero to two local land trusts. Obtain each organization’s ‘information packet” and/or study their website information. Have a brief phone conversation with a land trust representative; share some information about your property and your motivation for protecting it. • After studying the paper or website materials, try to narrow your choices of land trusts you wish to consider further. Schedule a more in-depth conversation via telephone or an initial, get-acquainted meeting at the Land Trust’s office. Allow time to ask questions, explore general ideas, and exchange thoughts about the land and conservation easements, and learn more about the land trust
