What the difference between a gate valve and a ball valve?

Gate valve has a panel that slides down over the opening constricting and finally eliminating flow though. A ball valve has a ball with a hole in the middle that rotates to constrict and eliminate flow. IMO gate valves offer better fine adjustment and control of the water than do Ball valves. Gate valves in my area are also about twice as expensive.
