There are a few prominent meteor showers that occur during the course of the year – more especially during the second half of the year though. The Perseids in July/August marks the start of the meteor “season” if you like. Anyway during October the Orionid shower is the main feature, this is then followed by the Leonids in November, Geminids in December and Quadrantids in early Janyary. Each shower is named after the constellation within which the radiant lies – i.e. the point in the sky where the meteors appear to come from. This is just a perspective effect though. A typical shower lasts a few days with activity peaking for a few hours within that time period. The peak activity can range from just a few meteors an hour to many thousands an hour in the case of rare meteor storms (Leonids 1966).
