Out of all of the spring flowering bulbs, it is wise to plant Tulips pretty much the last of all of them, as they can often rot away. The actual date varies by where you live, and when they would normally bloom. Mid to late November is a good general time, assuming that your ground will not be hard frozen for months at that point (a little earlier if it would be). This relates to Northern Hemisphere gardens – southern would be the reverse of this, so May June time for Australia etc. It’s good to plant them with a little grit below, especially if you have a soil that’s clay, or has bad drainage. Even with this late planting, they will still root over winter, and be ready to flower in spring time. Pest problems? Keep pests at bay with some netting, or other barriers, if they are a problem. Strong smells can be good, and even crushed moth balls, which last for months, can be useful, or some hot chilli powder, though this does wash off, and needs to be replaced.
