What type of wine cooler/storage unit is best?
If you are storing wine for a long time, it isn’t necessary to purchase a wine storage unit, but it is recommended. The unit will keep the humidity at the right level to keep the corks from drying out or getting moldy. Look for one that has temperature and humidity control, as that is the most important thing. Most people’s basements fit the right conditions for cellaring wine (around 55 degrees and 60% relative humidity), so there is no need for a storage unit. Just be sure to store the bottles on their side so the corks do not dry out. Whites should only be chilled down right before they are drank, as tartar crystals can form on the cork if they are left cold for too long. The only reason I have a wine chiller/storage unit is because I cellar barolo’s and bordeaux’s which cost upwards of $100 and I age them for 10-15 years. I want to protect my investments and do not want to chance the bottles going bad.
