What types of treatment are available for people with schizophrenia?
Although medicines are a mainstay in the treatment of schizophrenia, it is important to realise that they are only one part. Today it is recognised that a more comprehensive and holistic package of measures is needed to achieve long-term remission or cure. Such measures can embrace not only the person with the illness, but also their families as well and may involve measures such as social skills training, occupational therapy, behavioural therapy, and family therapy to help them be aware of the nature of the illness and provide appropriate support. Some of these are discussed further in a later section.
