What was good and what was bad about the Soviet Union?
With your icon, I doubt that we will agree on much, but I will try to accept this challenge. On the plus side, the Russian government of the Czarist era was a terrible system. The country leadership bounced between a few well meaning people and some iron willed ones. There was confusion, weakness and there was disinterest. Something needed to happen. The war with Japan and then WW1 were poorly conceived and waged at terrible prices for the common people. The system of government needed a change. Most agree that overnight conversion to a modern democratic state under a capitalist market might not work. On the other hand, the toppling of the existing government ad later murder of the Romanov family was a bit drastic. The men who were speaking of the creation of a nobleMarxist regime were really setting up special little committees from which to hold absolute power through violent means. This was not a truly free workers utopia at all. There was perpetual murder, deception and corruption
