What was the quality of life like for less attractive women before feminism?
Biologically, we’re attracted to people of a similar attractiveness to ourselves. Classically attractive men will usually be attracted to classically attractive women and “ugly” (I feel bad using that word about people!) men will be attracted to “ugly” women. So I think women all had roughly the same chance of finding a husband. It depends more on who you happen to meet, just the same as now. Also, women staying at home was a middle class privilege, working class women still had to work. Not highly paying jobs, but then again working class men didn’t have highly paying jobs either. A middle class woman who didn’t marry would remain with her father (not that being dependent on your father for most of your life is a good thing, but it’s not like they were left with no money or means of survival.
