What was the reason for the spanish-american war?

The newspapers of the day were controlled by two people William Randolf Hearst and Pulitzer. They kept promoting the idea of invading Cuba to attack “Spanish aggression in America”. When the battleship USS Maine exploded and sank in Havana harbor people were told the Spanish had done it and the next thing you know, the U.S. was at war in Cuba. In the end they figured out the Maine blew up because of coal dust in the engine room. Ironically enough the U.S. got involved in the Iraqi war pretty much the same way.
