What was the strongest tank the germans used in world war 2?

I suppose that depends on how one defines “strongest”. The Tiger II with its 150mm thick sloped armor and 88mm L71 gun offered the best protection and greatest firepower of any German tank to see action in WWII. But the Tiger II was under-powered and slow, offered less cross-country mobility than other German tanks, mechanically unreliable and had a pitifully short operational range which made it unsuitable for the task it was designed for. It was because of its great expense and technical sophistication produced in pitifully small numbers that could never have had a major impact on the war. The Panther was Germany’s late-war mass-production tank. Less heavily armored than the Tiger II but with greater range, mobility and more than adequate firepower from a 75mm L70 gun that was superior to the original 88mm of the Tiger I, the Panther was a much greater problem for the Allies even though by many measures it was not as “strong” as the Tiger II.
