They were starved. They were beaten to within an inch of their lives for no reason. They were forced to stand in the snow in thin cotton prison uniforms and wooden clogs that were all one size for hours on end. They were forced to stand in lines at any time of the day or night for hours on end. They were given no medical treatment. They had to work when they were sick, when they had infections, when they were starving… They slept in barracks that were made for, say, 100 people but would hold almost 1000.
