What will happen to dukedom of york when prince charles inherit the throne?

Nothing will happen to the title. Andrew will remain the Duke of York until his death, at which point the title will have to await a new holder, since Andrew has no son to inherit it. Since it is a title most often given to the second son of the monarch (though not always), we may not see a new Duke of York for many years. There are no hard and fast rules about which titles to give to which children, except as regards the title of Prince of Wales. George V named his three younger sons the Dukes of York, Gloucester, and Kent, but Victoria’s second, third, and fourth sons were the Dukes of Edinburgh, Connaught, and Albany. Much also depends on whether a title is already held by someone else. Prince Edward’s title of Earl of Wessex was apparently created for him at his personal request.

Nothing. The Duke of York is the traditional title for the second son of the monarch, but as Prince Andrew already has it, it won’t be changed as it isn’t “free” until he dies. When Prince Charles becomes King, he will just stay as he is. There are no rules except that the heir apparent to the throne is automatically Duke of Cornwall, Duke of Rothesay, Earl of Carrick, Baron Renfrew, Lord of the Isles and Prince and Great Steward of Scotland. It is traditional to make him Prince of Wales and Earl of Chester as well. The second son is traditionally made Duke of York – again, this is just tradition. And once you have a title, you have it for life. There are no traditions about 3rd and later children. The other traditional thing is to give a Prince a Royal Dukedom as a wedding present. Which makes this an interesting hot topic – Prince William gets married next month and it will be very surprising if Queen Elizabeth II doesn’t give him one. Duke of Cambridge, Duke of Sussex, and Duke of C

The Dukedom of York is traditionally given to the second son of the sovereign. However this title is passable to the male line heirs of the second son. It has only happened that all the previous creations of the peerage have resulted in either merging with the crown or becoming extinct through lack of heirs. The current title will become extinct upon the death of Prince Andrew unless he has a son. Or unless the law is changed and the title is inherited by one of his daughters. Titles are given only through precedent and tradition unless it is already held by a user.
