What will I feel during cryotherapy?
The cervix is relatively insensitive to discomfort associated with freezing, but the uterus frequently contracts, causing a menstrual-like cramping sensation. This usually resolves within a few minutes, but can last somewhat longer in some cases. Medications used for cramping such as ibuprofen (available in over-the-counter preparations such as Advil, Nuprin, Medipren, etc.) are usually very helpful. Many people find that taking these medications before the procedure can minimize discomfort. Take 400-600mgm with food one hour before your appointment. As with any medication, however, caution is warranted. Some people (for example, those with aspirin allergies, a history of ulcers or kidney disease) may not tolerate such medication. Talk to your practitioner if you have questions. Sometimes there is a flushing or hot sensation over the upper body that occurs minutes after the cryotherapy. This is transient and, although annoying, not serious.
