What word list is used with SpeedComp Reading Lessons (SCRL)?
We use our own word list. Over 98% of our words have been compiled from literature and/or based on a consensus of important words to know. We also include a few slightly obscure words and a few names in order to provide interest and to illustrate certain aspects of the English language. Almost all of the words on standard word lists (such as Dolch) are included in SCRL. Traditionally, no more than a few hundred words could be taught in a school year, and even then many children did not learn every word. Given this limitation, the choice of which words to teach has been a necessary focus for educators. In contrast, SCRL, in partnership with teachers, can teach students thousands of words per school year. Thus, it is now practical to teach all of the important words – Dolch words, words often found on standardized tests, words normally associated with higher grades, and many more words found in the vocabulary of well-educated people.
