The word emo came about from a style of music (from the ’80s) called Emotive Hardcore Punk. Because of this misconception, the emo culture revolves around self-pity and exaggerated sadness. Emo kids often believe that they have life very hard, but usually don’t realize that everyone else is having the same problems. In order to appear especially emotional (or “emo” as they so believe) they often cut their wrists with razor blades. While this may seem very screwed up, the actual cuts they inflict do not hurt, or hurt very little, as they are very superficial. The recognition and respect that the cutter will receive from the scene (emo community) when someone spots the cuts is normally their motivation, although some emo kids cut themselves to make themselves feel sadder and to make themselves feel alone.
