What year did Spain become and independent country?
Meanwhile, Spain celebrates the Independence Day the 2nd May. In 1808 the armies of Napoleon entered in Spain with the excuse of attacking Portugal. Until then, spain and the French Empire were allies (it’s why they fought together the british in Trafalgar in 1805). But, instead to begin the campaign against Portugal,, the sieged the most important spanish cities, kidnapped the royal family and imposed as king the Napoleon’s brother, Joseph Bonaparte. Angry with the french, the 2nd May of 1808, the people of Madrid revolted against the french. In the following days the rebelion spreaded around whole of Spain, beginning the Spanish Independence War (known by the English as Peninsular War) that lasted until 1812.
