Personally, I don’t think you should back down because it got ‘awkward’ with your teacher. Tailoring your opinion for your audience defeats the purpose of being a good public speaker. You should always stand strong and speak your opinion, no matter what side of the spectrum you fall. The same goes for your fear of half the class hating you. Anyone who hates you for your political views is probably not a person whose opinion who should pay much attention to anyway. Besides, your teacher asked for a controversial topic, no? Then I don’t see where your teacher or your peers can get off by being upset at you for actually choosing a controversial topic. Your opinions really shouldn’t affect your teacher’s grading, especially if it’s a public speaking class. If, however, you’re still keen on changing topics, there’s a wide spectrum to choose from.
