Whats the atmosphere like at Yankee Stadium? Is it comparable to watching sport in England?
Well, I have only been to a handful of football games in England, back in the early 80s and mostly at St James’ Park. As a woman, I felt I’d grown an extra head and found the atmosphere somewhat threatening. I would not hesitate to take my kids to The Stadium, and even though beer is freely available and there is no segregation of fans, I have rarely seen trouble of any sort. One really good example of the atmosphere is this: We were at one game this year which was played against the St Louis Cardinals. Among the Cardinal players was one Tino Martinez, who had been a much loved first baseman with the Yankees – and a favourite of mine and my daughter’s – until he was traded to the “Cards” to make way for Jason Giambi. This was his first series back in the Bronx because the Cardinals are a National League team from another part of the country, so not one we meet often. When Tino came up to bat, the entire Stadium was on its feet chanting “Tin’ow! Tin’ow!”, and when, during that game, he
