Whats the best Mac laptop $1,000 can buy right now?
The answer to that really depends on what you need it for. It’s hard for me to recommend buying a new iBook G4 right now. Used and refurbished models running at 1GHz and higher can be had for as little as $650 if you don’t mind buying without a warranty. Considering Intel iBooks are just around the corner (or over the summer at the latest, I’d think), buying a new iBook right now just doesn’t make sense. 12″ PowerBooks with reminaing warranties/Applecare can be had for less than the $999 price of a new low-end iBook. The 12″ PowerBook, however, isn’t the really alluring model for the purposes of this exercise. The 15″ PB adds a second RAM slot (one chip on the 12″ is soldered onto the board), FireWire 800 port, PC Card slot, and that gorgeous 15.2″ widescreen display. There is obviously a difference between a 12″ iBook G4 and 12″ PowerBook, but the real differences take light when you look at the 15″ PowerBook instead.
