Unless you’re built like an Amazon, stick with the smallest and lightest bike that will do the job. Don’t buy an SV650 or a Ninja 500 or anything else that weighs over 350 lbs – you won’t enjoy it and might not even ride it enough to build up your skills to the point where you do enjoy it. I’ve seen this happen a lot. There’s nothing wrong with a 250cc motorcycle – they’re light, inexpensive, and have plenty of power for highways. Buy used; if you outgrow it, you can usually sell it for what you put into it. With some of the nicer 250s, many riders never do. The Ninja 250 is the standard choice for a street bike. Inexpensive, plentiful in the used market, good quality components, nimble, and fast – the bike will do 100mph although it will take a while to get there. Honda just released the CBR250R, which is by far the most modern bike in this class (fuel injection, optional ABS). Not going to be cheap and probably no used market yet. If you like cruisers, the Rebel 250 is common and has
