The best way to get started is to start building out your own portfolio by building things that interest you. It does not matter what you build so long as you do it and get it to a reasonably finished state. This is pretty useful for a few reasons: 1/ You can have an area to experiment and learn, 2/ You have enough control to create an accurate representation for your skills and 3/ You can learn whether you are truly interested in web design as a career. The cost is basically hosting and your time but the benefit is if you do a good job on the site, you won’t have to look too long for a job and you’ll have something to show when talking to potential employers.
