Organic material is consumed by the various soil micro and macro organisms throughout the year. The quantity of organic material that needs to be added to maintain a reasonable and appropriate level of organic material depends on the soil type and the length of the growing season. In areas with Mediterranean climates which have greatly extended growing seasons, some soils will use as much as 4 inches (10 cm) of organic material per year. A figure of 2 inches (5 cm) of organic material per year would probably be more realistic for areas with a more seasonal climate and shorter growing seasons. Rake to smooth and to clean the soil surface of unwanted debris. Apply half of the needed organic material at the start of the growing season and the balance at the start of Summer.
