Whats the difference between a colonel and a general ?
General is a higher rank than Colonel. There are two types of Colonel (Lieutenant Colonel then Colonel) and four regular types of general (the lowest is Brigadier General, then Major General, then Lieutenant General, then just General). There are some ranks even higher than General, but they usually aren’t used. Some of the other answers have said you need 20 or 30 years to be any of these things, but I’m not convinced that’s true. Although I’m not sure. And I don’t know whether Colonels or Generals do any fighting themselves, but they have hundreds or thousands of people working for them, so I imagine they’d be pretty busy giving orders. But even if they don’t do any fighting themselves, nobody starts out as a Colonel or General. People work their way up to those ranks, and when they were young they may have done some of the fighting themselves. Also, Colonels do not command Brigade sized units, as someone said.
