Whats the Difference Between an Internet Search Engine and a Knowledge Management System?
Since the introduction of internet search engines, many corporations have looked at applying these engines in handling their corporate search requirements. Simple search engines scan massive volumes of data that are embedded within millions of websites worldwide, to retrieve potentially relevant information. However such tools provide little guidance beyond the initial query to narrow the range of possibilities. This is very similar to the multitude of full-text search engines used by many companies for their web self-service sites. The net result is that although the web search engines are very efficient in accessing multitudes of data, the relevance of the results and the accuracy of the search are entirely based on the intuitiveness and precision of the person asking the question.
