Probably the most prominent difference between the two is, a squid has 8 arms and 2 tentacles-used for feeding wherea an octopus has only 8 arms. The mobility of the species is different as well. The squid is the most well adapted siwmmer using propulsion. The octopus generally does not use propulsion swimming unless feeling threatened. Each different species of octopus have differnet life spans. Some can be as short as a couple of months or others, like the giant Pacific Octopus can live 5 years.
