Whats the difference between book, stable-3.6 and developer version?

• The book version, as the name indicates, is tied to the Data Mining book by Ian H. Witten and Eibe Frank. The API of this version of WEKA got frozen with the publication of the book in 2005 (actually a bit earlier, since publications take quite a while). It therefore only receives bug-fixes but no new features, like new classifiers, filters, etc. The version numbers are of format 3.4.x. • The developer version then became the code branch for active development and has received numerous extensions and enhancements. Any contribution must be compatible with this version. • As of December 19, 2008, a new branch got forked off the developer version to form a new stable version of Weka, labeled stable-3.6. This branch will receive only bugfixes, just like the book version. The version numbers are of format 3.6.x.
