These extensions were originally intended to identify COMmercial firms, NETwork providers and non-profit ORGanizations – but that intent is now largely ignored. COM names are still preferred for commercial web sites, but ORG and NET names are often reserved to ‘protect’ COM names – to keep others from getting them.
