“Sponsors” and “Friends” are separate programs with distinctly different purposes. The Athletic Sponsor Program exists entirely to provide vital recruiting resources for all of the Athletic Department’s varsity sports. It is the sole source of funds for bringing top prospects to the campus, and additional funds are put toward recruiting brochures, rental cars, and coaches’ recruiting trips. The funds are allocated to various sports as needed, unless a donor specifies a particular sport. By contrast, a separate Friends group exists for each sport, and each is intended to enhance the quality of that particular program and to meet essential needs that the basic operating budget cannot accommodate. Friends monies are often used for newsletters, receptions, banquets, awards, pre-season trips, video equipment, recruiting budget supplements, minor facility improvements, and other programmatic needs.
