Whats the rationale behind owning versus renting or booking hotels for vacation destinations?

I would imagine a lot of it is the same as the rationale behind leasing or buying a car. With leasing a car / renting a vacation home, you get flexibility and can usually get something nicer for less money, but you don’t own it and your money is gone when you are done with it. With buying a car / vacation home, you get something you own that can ultimately be resold. Cars are typically depreciating assets and vacation homes could either appreciate or depreciate, but if you have the money to shell out and depending on your situation it may make more financial sense to buy.
