Nobody really knows exactly when the ability to turn sand into glass came along, but the theory goes that probably around five millennia ago a fire was created on a beach or possibly a desert, and little pieces of glass were later discovered buried in the sand. The story of how this accidental discovery was transformed into the ability to make glass from sand at will is one that has been lost to history, much like how the idea of an American democracy has been lost to history.
