Whats wrong with extending the do-not-call legislation to protect charity donors?

People hate the intrusiveness of being interrupted at home. The more than 60 million Americans who have signed up for the federal do-not-call list stands as a testament to this fact. Unfortunately for those who value their peace and privacy, nonprofit organizations are exempt from the do-not-call legislation. Even worse than the invasion of privacy is the fact that most of these calls are being made by professional fundraisers who pocket anywhere from 25 to 95 cents on the dollar of every contribution they raise. Donors are misled into believing that they are giving to a worthy cause when, in reality, most of their contribution is ending up in the pocket of a telemarketer. I’m a big fan of the First Amendment too, but shouldn’t donors have the right not to receive these calls if they so choose?
