You should use lime to “sweeten” the soil if the plant requires alkaline soil. You would need to do a search to find out what the plant or plants you are planting like alkaline soil or acidic soil. If you are in an area that has acidic soil, you should probably use lime. Use the lime at no particular rate, I usually just throw a handful or so into a pot full of soil (if planting in a large pot) there is no need to worry about quantity. If using to amend soil in your flower bed, just a good 1/2 inch of coverage should be mixed in when preparing soil before planting. Be sure to mix in fairly well (don’t leave clumps). You can also use lime to change the color of hydrangeas, which is also a good indicator of your soil acidity(if they are blue in your area) or alkalinity(if they are pink in your area).Hope this helps!
